27th January, 2023 A week-long training on High Frequency (HF) Radio hosted by the Ministry of MEIDECC in collaboration with the Regional Emergency Telecommunication Cluster (ETC) and the United Nations World Food Programme (UNWFP) wrapped up today.
The training is one of ETC’s support to Tonga after the HTHH volcanic eruption and tsunami and was attended by eight radio operators from relevant agencies.
CEO for MEIDECC Mr Paula Ma’u said, “Tonga is fortunate to have ETC assistance in conducting this important training. The ultimate goal is to ensure that Tonga’s emergency communications infrastructure is resilient and ready.”
He stated that repetitive drills and trainings on the HF radio communications network are required to ensure the smooth day-to-day communications between relevant agencies and in the event of a crisis.
“The training provided valuable emergency radio communications skills and knowledge that will help participants improve their preparedness for inter-island communications and coordination using HF radios.”
The training was facilitated by a HF specialist Mr Mitch Clifford from Barrett Communications, a company which designs, manufactures and markets HF and VHF radio equipment.
ETC will also assist Tonga with the deployment of emergency communications infrastructure for the HF emergency radio communications and coordination network as well as the VHF coastal maritime watch.
ENDS.
