Beacon Registration (EPIRB)
14th January, 2025
This is a public announcement from the Department of Communications under the Ministry of MEIDECC, addressing all seafarers and the public regarding the registration and use of the device known as a Beacon (EPIRB) especially in the maritime community. This device is highly beneficial in cases of emergencies at sea.
What is a Beacon (EPIRB)?
A beacon is an electronic device that transmits a location signal, often used by seafarers during emergencies at sea to aid in rescue operations.
Benefits of Using a Beacon
- Quick and efficient response during emergencies at sea.
- Accurate location tracking of the emergency.
How Does It Work?
- Activation: The beacon is activated (either automatically or manually).
- Alert Transmission: The beacon sends an emergency signal to satellites in orbit, which then relay the alert to the relevant maritime rescue authorities. For Tonga’s waters, this signal is received by the Rescue Coordination Centre of NZ (RCCNZ) operate by the Maritime NZ
- Rapid Assistance: Rescue teams from RCCNZ immediately receive the transmitted information and respond swiftly, however, RCCNZ and Tonga counterparts including Tonga Police and MEIDECC must identify the owner of the vessel and the Beacon (EPIRB) to ease the rescue mission.
How to Register a Beacon
Register your beacon (EPIRB) to any of the MEIDECC offices, together with your vessel radio equipment. The requirements are as follows:
- HEX number
- Model/Serial Number
- Ownership Name
- Vessel Name
We kindly request that anyone in possession of a beacon (EPIRB) that has not yet been registered, or anyone aware of an unregistered beacon, please visit our office to complete the registration process, or reach us on the contact details below:
